.com or .com.sg Domain Names

Often, we receive enquiries about domain name issues regarding .com or .com.sg. Clients are concerned when they intend to choose between these names.

Basically, there are only slight differences when making a choice to choose between the 2:

  • .com.sg is slightly more expensive than .com. But not much difference actually
  • .com.sg is administered by Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA)
  • .com.sg requires you to register for a company
  • .com.sg names are more readily available, since they are limited to Singapore companies only
  • .com.sg names will be slightly longer, we suggest you register for .com if you can find a decent name
  • .com.sg will be suitable for businesseses with target market in Singapore only

There are certain misconceptions we would like to clarify here too:

  • .com and .com.sg does not make any difference to your search engine optimization purpose
  • .com domain names limited to American companies or individuals only

We hope this blog can help with your decision in domain name registration. =)

Internet Gold Rush for China Market

Recently, I had a discussion with my partner about expanding our business to China. To me, its a giant yet to be tamed. And we know that some big companies were already there, wrestling with the forces of the republic. Not many survive though.

Well, we do not laugh at others. Small companies like us are not even ready to go. We believe that if we can’t even stand properly in Singapore, China will be too far for us. Moreover, Chinese companies will have the homeground advantage. Not preparing fully before going to battle is half the battle lost.

In fact, we have some web design clients already tapping on China’s manufacturing industry. If you have relatives from China with strong business network, we believe you will have the upperhand. China’s export is one of the most lucrative pies you can think of. Prices are simply unbeatable and we strongly believe the phrase “Made in China” may slowly become a brandname.

There are various issues we are thinking about still. Stepping into a foreign land is not going to be easy. Like what they often say, “there are crocodiles in the Yangtze river”. Not having someone to trust from a foreign country is our biggest concern. Legal issues like copyright, payment processing, dealings with government agencies are some of the things we have been thinking about.

Yet, I strongly believe that the later we enter the Chinese market, the more dangerous it is. Business environment will become more and more competitive as the market grows, eating everybody for lunch sooner or later.

From what I see, these few years will be the golden years for online business in China. Google has entered and acquired part of Baidu (The Chinese Search Engine). The growth and establishment of search engines means the laying of infrastructure for millions of small businesses online.

Well, we do have some ideas on what to do in China. Problem is.. Haha.. funding. =)

Site Ranking on Search Engines

For a few weeks now, SingaporeWebDesigner.com has been ranked No.1 in MSN for the following keyword phrases:

  • Singapore web design
  • Singapore web designer

This clearly illustrate to our clients that we are capable of achieving high ranking for even competitive industry like web design. Of course, there are clients asking us about our Google ranking.

For Google, we are ranked Top 10 for “Singapore web designer“. Google normally do not offer high ranking for new web sites. I believe it makes sense, since new players are less likely to offer good quality services. SingaporeWebDesigner.com is barely 6 months old (we are confident with our services though).

In the SEO industry, internet marketers will know about this. And we call it the “Google Sandbox Effect”. Hopefully, you can see us on Top 3 of Google search result by the end of February. This is what we hope to achieve.

On Yahoo!, its not so fast. Normally Yahoo! also takes about 4-5 months to give new sites high ranking. We believe you can find us on Top 20 of Yahoo! by the end of this month though.

We are doing all ethical SEO and we do not spam the search engines. Naturally, they recognize our effort for contributing good content online. Search engines are too clever nowadays. So, its really not worth the effort to use dirty tricks. I am aware of all those tricks like smart pages, spider food, cloaking, doorway pages and all the crappy stuff they can think of. We find all these techniques useless.

So if you are one of those spammers, please start doing something productive and generate good content. By the way, some webmasters have been spamming this site today. I seriously hope they can realize that this is not the way to get inbound links. We are not stupid, and we have been online for quite some time.
